My current connection speed is 12.0Mbps. Someone fix my computer =[

PS. Dear Diamond,

Get rid of hill classic. I severed my testicles off last time I played that map. I'd like to keep my penis if I could.

PPS. Y'all be gay

Aequitas May 11th, 2007 02:14 PM

lol internet 'speed tests' dont really mean shit anyway.. its way to easy to get numbers that are totally different from each other..

on that particular site.. each time i do it.. my down is different by 2 or 3 thousand..
its telling me on the average about 8000-10000 down and 800-1000 up

tho most ppl.. think thats actual download/upload speeds... but they dont know theres a big difference between kb (kilobits - network rate) and kB (kiloBytes - transfer rate)... i think its something like kilobits * 0.122 = kiloBytes (or kiloBytes / 0.122 = kilobits)

my actual transfer speeds are about 1200kBps (oddly enough tho, newsgroups report speeds over 2mBps sometimes) down & 120kBps up... which works out to like 9836kbps down and 983kbps up

could be cause you have comcast.. lol.. thats a really bad upload.. like 20kB/s

thooo.. i did hear from my dad (works for time warner) that comcast and road runner are apparently working on something together (i was high when he was telling me so i really dont actually recall details) thats supposed bring huge speed increases to cable.. i guess its something they are doing to compete with FiOS

Speaking of bytes/bits...

Got me wondering if bit conversion was different for data transmission. I always kind of assumed it was the standard 8 bits = 1 byte per computer architecture. So, I went and looked. This is what I came up with.

Quote:

The metric system
In some cases when used to describe data transfer rates bits/bytes are calculated as in the metric system as follows:
1 MB = 1,000,000 bits/bytes
1 kb = 1,000 bits/bytes
1 bit/byte
The period (.) is used as decimal separator.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The calculations is based on:
In the cases when used to describe data storage bits/bytes are calculated as follows:
1 byte = 8 bits
1 kilobyte (K / Kb) = 2^10 bytes = 1,024 bytes
1 megabyte (M / MB) = 2^20 bytes = 1,048,576 bytes
1 gigabyte (G / GB) = 2^30 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes
1 terabyte (T / TB) = 2^40 bytes = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes
1 petabyte (P / PB) = 2^50 bytes = 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes
1 exabyte (E / EB) = 2^60 bytes = 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 bytes
The period (.) is used as decimal separator.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Data Transmission conversion (kilobit):
In data communications, a kilobit is a thousand bits, or 1,000 (103) bits. It's commonly used for measuring the amount of data that is transferred in a second between two telecommunication points. Kilobits per second is usually shortened to Kbps.
Some sources define a kilobit to mean 1,024 (that is, 210) bits. Although the bit is a unit of the binary number system, bits in data communications are discrete signal pulses and have historically been counted using the decimal number system. For example, 28.8 kilobits per second (Kbps) is 28,800 bits per second. Because of computer architecture and memory address boundaries, bytes are always some multiple or exponent of two.

I have a 512kb or 1mb "unlimited" broadband I thinks, tho unlimited is limited at peak time :( so I cant use p2p programs during the week after 6pm till 11pm which is basicly when I get home... so i leave it on the rest of the day.. :D however my shitty service costs me about £15 ($30) a month... which is tres gay for what I get...

coltron May 12th, 2007 09:48 AM

well, that thing is retarded. on another test i get 8.8 but on that only like 7000, but the other one has a server in michigan.. this one closest is canadia, probably why it sucks.
oh and my internet is like 50$ a month.
