If you're going to go linux, pick a distro you like - it doesn't matter - it's all linux. That's the point of having so many distros, that you can choose what interface and package manager and level of installation work that you like. I liked debian and hated slackware, but that's not the same for everyone.
I've been using linux for like 6 years and I started with Red Hat then went to debian, LFS, gentoo, etc. (then to FBSD and solaris to try something new in the Unix family)
When you spend a long time with it you might change your mind on what you want to use and how hard/easy you want the UI to be... some people find GUI's obstructive and consoles more friendly and some people are the opposite. The nice thing about a distro with a GUI is that you have the option to use either the GUI or the console!
Okay - I think i'm done ranting now. i just think distro wars are retarded
