you type record "whatever name you want" in console.

when its done you type stop.

the file will then be in your dod folder, named whatever you named it .dem

fraps is only for screen capture, video/audio. It creates an uncompressed avi of the game when you have it up.

You have to watch demos in dod itself. Just open up the game and type "playdemo demoname" or "viewdemo demoname" in console.

dia has demofreak in downloads/tools. There's also complexity demo viewer, but the only time I ever use one or the other is to see check the rates of a player.
